An off-duty Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed a man who appeared to be under the influence in a remote part of Southern California.
Information provided by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office indicates the incident took place near Santiago Peak, more specifically, the area of Holy Jim Trail and Main Divide Road, around 8:15 p.m. Saturday.
“Deputies from the Lake Mathews Sheriff’s Station responded and determined that the off-duty deputy had been approached by an adult male who appeared to be under the influence and was armed with a firearm,” RCSO said. “The deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer and gave the male multiple verbal commands to raise his hands.”
“The male refused to comply and subsequently removed his firearm from its holster, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting by the off-duty deputy,” Riverside County officials elaborated.
The man, identified as 50-year-old Perris resident Agustin Vasquez Calvillo, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other people, including the off-duty deputy, were injured in the incident.
Officials from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Force Investigations Detail are handling the investigation into the shooting.
No further details are being released right away.
