$53,000 reward being offered for 2006 cold case murder of Navy sailor

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying suspects involved in the 2006 murder of a 22-year-old Navy sailor in the Golden Heights neighborhood.

According to reports, Ronald Harnish and two friends were driving down the 1100 block of 30th Street on Dec. 27, 2006, when they pulled over and got into a confrontation with two Hispanic men who were standing on a sidewalk.

For reasons still under investigation, one of the pedestrians reportedly pulled out a gun and began firing shots at Harnish and his friends. Harnish was shot dead at the scene, while one of his friends was shot but survived his wounds.

A combination of different agencies is offering a $53,000 reward to anyone with information regarding the cold case. The $50,000 portion of the reward, which the Governor’s Office is providing, will only be paid if an arrest and conviction are made in the case.

Anyone with information regarding the murder of Harnish is encouraged to call the SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477.
