A celebration of courage and authenticity brought vibrant energy to Township 9 Park in Sacramento. Organizer Cristina Navarro shared why this event is meaningful to her.
“I came out in college. It was difficult at first for my family…It took time for them to really accept me. But I think it’s just realizing that that doesn’t change who I am,” Navarro said.
“There have been a lot of attacks against the LGBTQ community lately. And so we decided that, you know, it’s really important to highlight the bravery and the courage that it takes to speak and stand in your truth,” Navarro said.
The encouraging, high-energy event featured live entertainment and LGBTQ+ resource providers focused on gender-affirming care, harm reduction, mental health, and safe sex.
Jojo Aremndarez, who stopped by the festival, explained how he came out as gay in college in Rhode Island, where a supportive environment made all the difference.
“It’s all a process. You come out when you want to and when you’re ready. Sometimes, people get down on their luck and need some support, and we all need that in life. But even if you’re a person who has resources, knowing about these resources, you can spread the word and help other people,” Aremndarez said. “Knowing there’s other people to support you along the way. It’s great.”
